In 1840 the talented jeweller, Carl Fabergé, started his career in St Petersburg, Russia. Fabergé designed his imperial egg collection as special Easter gifts from Tsar Alexander III to his Tsarina.  He was inspired by historical artworks and religious themes, and in fact the egg shape itself is associated with creation, spring, new life and fertility.  The eggs were made from 18 carat gold with vibrant enamel colours and precious gemstones such as diamonds.

Some of the most delightful things that the original House of Fabergé made, and that many ladies of fashion enjoyed wearing and treasured, were miniature eggs that could be worn on chains as pendants and bracelets.
